Über das DIZ

The DIZ serves as an extracurricular study area, community centre, museum, archive, and research and information centre.

It is a memorial museum for the victims of the National Socialism, and has been open to the public and especially to school classes since fall 1994. It is financially supported by the Hessische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung and by the District Council of Marburg-Biedenkopf. The museum is owned by the Municipal Council of Stadtallendorf.

We are situated in the side-wing of the restored Aufbaugebäude which has become a historical monument due to it being the former administrative building of the Dynamit Nobel AG, situated right in the city centre.

The subject of the permanent exhibition is the varied and extraordinary history of the place Allendorf, from the Weimarer Republik to the fifties, from a small farming village to today’s industrial town. The exhibition focuses mainly on the period 1933 – 1945, when Allendorf became an important location for the armament production of World War II. The DIZ has set itself the task to reappraise and reveal the situation of foreign forced laborers who had lived in the camps and worked in the ammunition factories during that time.

As a central memorial place of the region of Middle-Hesse concerning the armaments industry and forced labor during the National Socialism period, the DIZ provides numerous possibilities to gain information and to do individual research directly on site.
